LA Times Home & Garden Roundup 11.21.09
Los Angeles

112109-hng01.jpgA home that looks like it came out of a catalogue, from decorator's head, where you can't imagine flopping down on the couch with the dog, don't interest us. Personal, one-of-a-kind, DIY, handmade, unique, livable, whimsical even - these are the goals for how we'd describe the homes we're drawn to. With that in mind, take a look at some of the articles from this week's Los Angeles Times Home & Garden section: A pendant lamp made from straws; a camera that shows your garden growing in fast forward; a shop that pumps new life into old stereo speakers; and, an architect's family's home in Silver Lake. Links after the jump...

Luciano & Marzia's Labor of Love
House Tour

112009luciano3.jpg

Name: Luciano, Marzia, and Margherita
Location: Modena, Italy
Size: 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom condo
Years lived in: 28

Modena, an ancient city in Emilia-Romagna, is home to the Ferrari company, Italy's best balsamic vinegar, and this incredible pre-war apartment, shared by Luciano, his wife Marzia, and their daughter Margherita. The building dates back to 1906, and the first thing you notice when you walk through the door are the hand-painted walls and ceilings, which Luciano and Marzia had restored to their original colors and motifs.

Bryan's Fashionable Statement
House Tour

112009bryanboone01.jpgName: Bryan Boone
Location: Downtown Los Angeles, California
Size: 650 square feet
Years lived in: 1/2 year

Situated at the heart of Los Angeles' bustling downtown fashion district, Bryan's impeccably decorated small space is a Jonathan Adler-ish oasis of calm and comfort. Despite luxurious appointments, the space was furnished with a keen eye for good design at reasonable prices, tapping into what Bryan described as an obsessive focus for Craigslist deals, decorating the majority of the 650 square feet with vintage and future design classics bought at a fraction of retail prices. From the clear chess pieces arranged within a lantern to the vintage suit cases just peeking out from underneath the bed, Bryan's home confidently showcases his affinity for design both new and old in memorable fashion.

Tips and Inspiration: Decorating With Candles

No Thanksgiving table—or any dinner table, for that matter—is complete without candles. The soft, flickering light from candles sets an instantly intimate mood. My husband and I often light candles on random old weeknights, just to make our meal that much more relaxing. As you prepare to set your holiday table, consider these candle-related tips.

Have You Ever Hired A House Sitter?

hs112009.jpgWe haven't. When we head out of town, our dog goes to friends (or comes along) and we are not really "plant people" so that isn't an issue. I think it feels ok because we live in a multi-unit building - we know that someone is always around. How about you - have you had a sitter come keep an eye on things while you hit the road?
