Luciano & Marzia's Labor of Love
House Tour

112009luciano3.jpg

Name: Luciano, Marzia, and Margherita
Location: Modena, Italy
Size: 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom condo
Years lived in: 28

Modena, an ancient city in Emilia-Romagna, is home to the Ferrari company, Italy's best balsamic vinegar, and this incredible pre-war apartment, shared by Luciano, his wife Marzia, and their daughter Margherita. The building dates back to 1906, and the first thing you notice when you walk through the door are the hand-painted walls and ceilings, which Luciano and Marzia had restored to their original colors and motifs.

Have You Ever Hired A House Sitter?

hs112009.jpgWe haven't. When we head out of town, our dog goes to friends (or comes along) and we are not really "plant people" so that isn't an issue. I think it feels ok because we live in a multi-unit building - we know that someone is always around. How about you - have you had a sitter come keep an eye on things while you hit the road?

What Color Tablecloth for Newly Painted Dining Room?
Good Questions

drqsm111909.JPGQ: I recently painted my Craftsman dining room (larger photo below) with white trim and royal plum walls. My table is a family heirloom that I just had refinished so I'm not even going to dare to leave it bare. My question is: what color tablecloth or even table runner with placemats do you suggest? I really want it to look elegant so I'm thinking gray but part of me would like to be adventurous and go with green or orange. Any thoughts?

Modern Rustic Cupboards & Cabinets

By now, the clean lines and natural materials of "modern rustic" style have become a familiar sight. The aesthetic mixes 21st century organic modernism with nostalgia for traditional American and European woodworking, and one area where this style is really catching on is kitchen design.

Holiday Decor Made of Felt

Come to think of it, felt has been a part of every single Christmas I've been home for. Our familiar felt stockings have been around for as long as I can remember, and they continue to be used each year. What other holiday decorations can we find that are made of felt?

When Do You Put Up Your Holiday Decor?
Survey

112009-nordstrom.jpg We let out a silent cheer when we came across this sign at Nordstrom yesterday. As the holidays seem to become closer and closer to Halloween every year, it seems Thanksgiving feels a little left behind.

Although we understand the benefit of decking the halls early, we're not sure if we're ok with the idea. Share your thoughts after the jump!

Twilight Inspiration: Edward Cullen's Bedroom Design

Since today is the launch of New Moon, we thought we'd take a look back to just around a year ago, when we Twilight hit the screens and we posted this look at Edward's bedroom...

edwardbella112408.jpgsmall112408.jpg We went to see Twilight this weekend and our room radar went into overdrive when we saw the set for Edward Cullen's bedroom. Of course, the whole house is gorgeous, with its walls of glass and amazing forest views...but Edward's room was (appropriately) dreamy in a modern way. Jump below for details:

Another Approach to Casual Slipcovers: Les Indiennes

Earlier this month we wrote a post about how to make a dropcloth slipcover work. There were mixed reactions to the idea of draping a sofa in a basic canvas throw, so we're wondering how people feel about using a printed cloth cover, like this sofa styled in hand-blocked indigo fabric from Les Indiennes.

Weekend Tent by Cibic & Partners

This mod tent (titled "the Perfect Weekend" by Italian designer Aldo Cibic) is the grown-up version of a kid's fantasy play fort. Cibic makes it clear that, although his idea takes the form of a tent, it's not meant for camping.
