How To Clean House Plants Using…Mayo?
Home Hacks

020910shinyleaves01.jpg2010HomeHackspostBadge.jpgYour green leafed friends can accumulate a noticeable dull patina of household dust (aka your skin flakes and dirt) over a period of time untended. With the rainy day weather keeping you inside, now is a good time to revive them to their full luster with a little bit of TLC. Your photosynthesizing friends will love you for it.

A Sconce Like This One?
Good Questions

Q: I am looking for some sconces for an entryway. I recently walked into a store on Melrose, and fell completely in love with a sconce by Alison Berger. Unfortunately, as I suspected, it is more a piece of art than a light fixture, and is way out of my budget. Does anyone have any suggestions for something similar (dark bronze hardware, clear glass shade) at less than $300? It seems so simple, but is not so easy to find!

Great Ideas from A Small Kitchen

We love how the kitchen tends to be the center of action in a majority of homes. Whether it be a "command center" or just a place to hang out and unwind with friends over a glass of wine, the kitchen is where it's at. Heidi's ideas help maximize the performance of her small space--so it functions like a kitchen twice its size!

Affordable Lounge Chairs and Cocktail Tables

A round cocktail table surrounded by four comfy lounge chairs seems to be the perfect arrangement for sharing drinks and conversation with friends, playing board games with family, or just reading the paper with a cup of coffee. There is no rule stating that a cocktail table must be flanked by a sofa and two chairs, so why not shake it up just a little?

Add This To Your Blog Roll: AcmeHowTo

020910-acme.jpgThe other day, our refrigerator started making funny strangling noises and, when the motor shut down, its shudder was more exasperated than usual. Before calling in a refrigerator repair guy, we wandered over to AcmeHowTo.com

Is It Custom? Or IKEA? Tips from Two Swedish Architects

We really loved the photos of this family kitchen. It was designed on a budget by Swedish architect Christine Albertsson, who owns a Minneapolis architecture firm with her husband.

When they renovated their own kitchen, they wanted to do it on a modest budget but still honor their clean, modern aesthetic.

So they turned to the Swedish flat-pack giant — but they added a few touches that make their kitchen look much more custom.

How To Clean a Built-In Cutting Board
Home Hacks

2010HomeHackspostBadge.jpgWhether you're using your built-in cutting board for extra surface space (or for cutting veggies), you'll want to make sure it's been cleaned. Even though we just moved in, we could tell our wood cutting board has been around the block a few times. So we gave our friend a call (who happens to be a chef) to learn how to properly clean our built-in cutting board.

Colorful Headboard and White Bedding

020910_heardboard.jpgWe've spent a good deal of time mixing patterns and stripes and what have you with bedding; so this is a nice change:keep the bedding simple and white and dress up the headboard.

How To Reupholster Dining Chairs 2 Different Ways
Home Hacks

2010HomeHackspostBadge.jpg We've been collecting a particular style of blackwood dining chair one at a time for the past couple of years. They all had mismatched upholstery that was damaged and worn so it was time to do something about it. While they all matched in style, they couldn't all be reupholstered the same way.

Should I Paint the Trim On My Sofa?
Good Questions

020810lagoodquest01.jpgQ: I just recently purchased this houndstooth sofa and I am struggling with decor ideas. All the other accessories in my apartment are black, so I was wondering if it would be a good idea to paint the wooden trim on the sofa to match the rest of the decor?

Photo Wall Using Vintage Frames

We love displaying photos of family and friends around the house but sometimes, in smaller homes there's less surface space for picture frames. Hilda's wall of photos using vintage frames is perfect for displaying pics of those that are near and dear.

Remove Pills From Winter Sweaters With Sandpaper

020809-sweater.jpg There's some things, that no matter how useful they are, we just can't bring ourselves to purchase due to their uni-tasker nature (thank you Alton Brown). One of those being a sweater depiller. It's not like we don't need one, but it's just something else to take up space in our bathroom drawer — so instead we're turning to our tool chest.

How To Prevent Break Ins

020810_brekin.jpgWe recently moved from a 3rd floor apartment to a ground floor house. And before any of the neighbors had a chance to introduce themselves, we had a different kind of welcome, we were burglarized. It was the first time either of us had been broken into and it definitely gave us a scare.
